When Work and Travel Align: Visiting a Client in Osaka
In November 2024, I had the privilege of visiting one of our valued clients in Osaka during a personal trip. With a free day during my stay, I planned this visit a month in advance. This visit was a reminder of the immense value of translations in creating seamless experiences across cultures. Taking an Uber to the location, I had a humorous moment when the driver enthusiastically spoke to me in Japanese. With a smile, I replied, “Sumimasen, Nihongo wakarimasen” (Sorry, I don’t understand Japanese). The irony wasn’t lost on me—as someone working in translations, the language barrier made for a funny and humbling start to the day.
Upon arrival, I was struck by the grandeur of the hotel—it truly lived up to its five-star reputation. While waiting in the lounge, I met Ms. Angela, our client. Over coffee and pastries, we had delightful conversations about work, the hotel, translation projects, my trip, some of her recommendations, and much more. It was heartwarming to connect with someone who spoke my language, making me feel at home despite being in a foreign country.
Discovering Elegance and Inclusivity
Ms. Angela generously gave me a tour of the hotel, showcasing where our translations were displayed. She also took me to various restaurants and even the wedding venues within the property. It was incredible to see how comprehensive the hotel’s offerings were—they have everything from a salon to dress boutiques to chapels. Guests only need to show up, and the hotel can handle the rest!
The highlight of the tour was visiting the hotel’s bar, NAMBAR10. Ms. Angela shared the hotel’s unique promotions aimed at fostering inclusivity. They host vibrant drag queen performances at the bar and even offer LGBTQ+ wedding packages—initiatives that are still quite rare in Japan. Witnessing their commitment to inclusivity and diversity was truly inspiring.
When Translations Transform Experiences
Seeing our translations in action—helping guests navigate the hotel and enhancing their experience—was both humbling and motivating. What might seem like a simple brochure or signage holds immense value for those who rely on them, whether it’s finding a restaurant or navigating another country’s intricate subway system.
I’m incredibly grateful to Ms. Angela Silvestre and Ms. Kenzie Simmons of Swissôtel Osaka for their warm hospitality. Their insights into Japanese culture and the hotel’s offerings enriched my understanding and appreciation of our collaboration.
This visit reignited my passion for what we do. It reminded me that translations are more than just words—they are bridges that connect people, foster understanding, and create meaningful connections. As project managers and translators, we play a vital role in shaping how people experience the world, even if our work often goes unnoticed. These experiences have deepened my commitment to our craft. Translation is about amplifying voices, breaking barriers, and building a more connected world. And I am proud to be part of this transformative journey.
